Because Saul is pretty much a schemer and he doesnt have the self-reflection, hes shut off part of his brain that has self-awareness and thinks about the repercussions and his hopes and dreams. I think Gene gets shot, and thats how they find out who he really is and my guess is that Kim goes away for quite sometime but decides to defend him. Its a thematic tie to the end of the episode. He treats the job seriously, takes his time with his measurements and calculations (and does them all by hand, not with a computer), lays out the types of equipment and schematics he will need, demonstrates an awareness of the surroundings and need for secrecy, and does not try to sugarcoat how difficult the project will be.
