Wall Drug is the perfect example of the American can-do attitude. Hand cut and perfect. I'll definitely be coming back here the next time I'm in SD. Ive been to many museums and zoos in DC and MD, but this is probably one of the best ones Ive seen!!! Relatively small museum who's pride and joy is clearly the exterior static displays.

The gift shop offers many great items. Next to an old gold mine, this modern museum & research lab offers scientific exhibits & tours. They have live music, check out the website for a schedule. Antelope are frequently playing in the nearby fields and buffalo are just a few miles down the road in ". There is a small pullout found on the west side of the Badlands Loop Road while climbing up Norbeck Pass. Highly recommend the Wildlife Coaster Loop Road. However, they were all closed for the winter season during our trip. Yes! There are several places along the highways to pull off safely for pictures. The baby bears are adorable! Choose the Grand Gateway Hotel and you will be choosing that kind of convenience. These dinosaurs were created to draw visitors coming to the area to see Mount Rushmore into Rapid City. What a nice surprise! Wanderlog makes planning a trip so effortless. Don't feed these guys, or get too close, though. Hope to see it finished in the future. They're cleaning up around the edges but keeping the Gulch vibe, oh yeah!! Looking like they're either emerging from or being absorbed by the mountain, the stony faces of past presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt carved 60ft tall in the granite of a Black Hills outcrop are one of the most famous images in the USA and the top attraction in the state; the monument gets nearly three million visitors each year. There are also good bathrooms if you just need a quick stop, a little church, the street where the wall drug store is located is quite interesting with the wild west style.

I was pleasantly surprised by the tour. To see as much of this harsh landscape as you can, spending more than a few nights at any nearby campgrounds in Badlands National Park is recommended. The landscape and wildlife are great. The dinosaurs are cool and there's also a gift shop/visitor center (though it was closed when I went). The park has many modern refinements including a museum with video streaming a gift shop restrooms and a restaurant. We saw 3 types of wolves, various elk/reindeer, coyotes, foxes, horned sheep, and so much more. Plan on about 90 minutes to walk through at a causal pace. Incredibly user-friendly, nearly all of its top sights lie along the 40-mile Badlands Loop Rd. It is a beautiful area but there isn't a lot of space when it gets busy. Several dinosaurs overlook the city, and there are nice views of the city and west from here. Make a stop at the Crazy Horse Memorial on your way north on Highway 385. Press the question mark key to get the keyboard shortcuts for changing dates. It's worth the stop. I have to admit, I thought this place would be the typical tourist trap. But there's one more stop you should make on the way, and that's at Wall Drug. The Reptile Gardens is home to lizards, snakes, crocodiles, parrots, Komodo dragons, insects, and amphibians. We took the natural entrance tour. The population was 337 at the 2010 census. You wont want to take a very wide vehicle (not sure our dually would make it). You can find the rock that they filmed on in one of the pictures I attached. The forest has an area of over 1.25 million acres and is managed by the Forest Service. It is located just a short drive away from Rapid City and the motive behind its foundation was to educate and entertain the public. An awesome place to learn about the history of Deadwood.

North of Rapid Creek, which bisects town, the Journey Museum & Learning Center offers local history and geology exhibits. Beer is cheap, the atmosphere is basically a time warp in the most wonderfully nostalgic way, the gal that runs it (Betsy, I think) is a true gem. If you are planning on stopping at Wall Drug then you should also stop here especially if you have kids.

In fact the Reptile Gardens is the largest reptile zoo in the whole wide world with more number of reptiles than any other zoo or animal park. From the Badlands, you'll head back to I-90 in the direction of Rapid City. This stone lamp had me laughing and my mom confused. Would you like the convenience of having a majority of Rapid City's shopping attractions within a few miles of your hotel?. Each reptile has a few interesting facts that are so much fun to read! Last time I was there, I ran into a group of people from a few miles from where I grew up. There is also a 25min video,gift shop, and jr. ranger program for the kids. The staff inside the store was so wonderful as well! This is the final resting place of the pillars of Deadwoods economic development. Take it slowly! Harry R. Gregerson, who was inspired by the Norwegian heritage of the region. It wasn't a super long tour, but it was very informative. The Prairie Dogs are too cute for words. Even though the sculpture is still a work in progress, you can visit the Crazy Horse Memorial Welcome Center, the Indian Museum of North America, the Native American Educational & Cultural Center, and the the sculptors workshop. A very lovely Christmas tour of the beautiful Adam's house in Deadwood. Beautiful and scenic! Listen to the narration in the church, interesting. Alex, the tour guide, was very entertaining and educational. It's a major hole in the wall and I love it. Started in 1948, this vast, unfinished mountain carving shares a site with a Native American museum. We all loved the trail hike and seeing it up closer. Like most of Deadwood, parking at the location is non-existant, so walking to it from a public lot or close by is your only option so be prepared if you need to use a wheelchair. Also the St Joe antiques mall is always worth walking through. Such a cool stop. As you tour the grounds you can read fascinating stories about past military missions, view military missiles on display and more. My little family and I took a trip to see this beauty during spring break. We got info and PDF map and went deep into some of the grassland property that's open to public use and found some cool rocks and awesome evening views. Narrow tunnel on the Needles Highway, near a tall granite spire shaped like the eye of a needle. With over 500 seats, getting a table wont be a problem either. We stopped, in awe of the view and spent a good amount of time there. The beer was cold and you had a very large selection. It contains the mortal remains of many local celebrities and others who were influential in founding and running Deadwood in its earliest years. You're going to need plenty of space in your device for pictures. Joint venture combining a Black Hills history museum & the 1892 home of one of Deadwood's founders. The kids had a blast. The views are breath-taking, the ride is full of so much history and information, and more importantly, the time spent together was wonderful. Constructed in 1930, the Adams House forms half of a house-and-museum complex dedicated to the most colorful characters from Deadwood's history. We spent quite a while look around the main exhibit. You can never go wrong w Custer State Park.

Start your day off with a visit to Mount Rushmore National Memorial, the famous rock carving dedicated to four influential US presidents. Planning travel has actually been fun instead of tedious because of this app. Inspired by this and Rapid Citys own Norwegian heritage, Reverend Harry Gregerson set about recreating the chapel. Make for Sylvan Lake first, which is the perfect spot to stop for an early picnic lunch.

There are also plenty of lodges with dining available. I've been to many air & space museums and this was the first with a B-29 (and a gorgeous example at that). We're going to try to make it back during the regular season and enjoy everything. Massive mountainside sculpture drawing crowds for its depiction of 4 former American presidents. Wall Drug takes up the entire block. A smaller cemetery existed before Mount Moriah in nearby Whitewood Gulch, and Moriah was meant to completely replace it. Many of the animals are featured in entertainment such as the Gator Show, Snake Show, and Birds Show.

The park is on the list of National Register of Historic Places. It's free and there's also a big free parking lot at the visitor center. Very peaceful. BUT the road is is not very well maintained. Tranquil lake area for swimming, canoeing, hiking, picnicking & rock climbing on large outcroppings. We saw a lot of animals Dear, Bears both brown and black bears, Elk, Rain dear, artic wolf's. Definitely a place to stop and look around. Unfortunately, the place that we were planning to eat was closing almost at the time that we were going to arrive, so we went somewhere else. Very interesting to learn about the missiles that exist beneath the plains in the Dakotas. Budget a half hour or so if you want to look through everything and there is also a video that you can watch if you have extra time to spend. You can easily spend hours here and I'm already planning on coming back soon. It does have a section where it explain the story behind this place (which makes you understand why so many billboards along the road) and fun activities for everyone. They have a junior ranger program and it's super cute. You only pay for parking, which is 10 dollars. Small, but has a REALLY great and varied collection! I wasn't sure what to expect when we got there but it was wild! Really glad we went! I love hiking M-Hill and hanging out at any of the coffee shops in town. I'm glad we walked through it. This Queen Anne Style Victorian mansion was built in the year 1892. There are quite a few stairs but almost all are going down with an elevator at the end. Stroll amongst Americas aviation history at the South Dakota Air & Space Museum!. We went on two tours, both with the same guide, but on different levels of the cave. It has many little interactive exhibits for the kids and at $9 for all of us total, it was a great way to spend 1.5 hours! It was called the Grandest house to the west of Mississippi. Visitor center was great, had lots of really interesting information about the cave history and animals and environment in the park. Mount Rushmore is a fantastic place to visit. Fabulous place with the juxtaposition of mining history and the future with particle and nuclear physics research. Walk the prayer trail and snap a photo on the way back of the statues with the church in the background. There are several stairs since it's at the top of a hill so it's a nice place to stretch your legs during a drive. For whatever reason this area of park is home to a huge number of prairie dogs. Your kids won't care anyways. (Or, if picnicking isn't your thing, you can also have lunch at the Sylvan Lake Lodge. They made great recommendations for local restaurants and places to visit. The South Dakota Air and Space Museum permits visitors to take a walk-through aviation history with their exhibits and galleries. Go full Badlands and rough it in the Badlands 1880 Homestead Cabin. Not only does it boast some of the best American wildlife viewing outside of Yellowstone, but also curvaceous mountain drives, serene lakeside retreats and plenty of open range.

Gas from Badlands National Park to Custer would cost around $16 to $37 USD, depending on your vehicle's fuel efficiency. We didnt stay at FT but we did stop in here for a day. Great family time!! The South Dakota Air and Space Museum, opened in 1983, is a well-known museum featuring many interactive exhibits on local and national aviation history. Great little park to take the kids to. Great to see the B1,B52,B25,B29 and others up close! At the end of the driving tour there is a very nice visitor center and gift shop and a small zoo type exhibits. Went to Mitzi's Books and found a new baking book to play with. Wall Drug is located conveniently off Interstate 90 that cuts east-west across South Dakota. Indoor and outdoor displays highlight modernization, engineering, and science and feature aircraft like the B-1B Lancer and the H-13 Sioux helicopter. So glad that we stopped here! Moderately strainuous. Just an FYI, it is approximately 15 mins from the Wind Cave National Park visitors center (where you begin your cave tours).

Who would have thought natural erosion can cause such beautiful, fantastic and striking formations. If you are buying tickets and have a long wait you can buy them further out and plan on visiting this area in the meantime. I'm Christian but not to involved in my religion, but this place took my breath away and for the first time I teared up while looking at something so beautiful and meaningful, this place is astounding. This is a super cool active paleontological dig site containing the world's largest concentration of mammoth bones (actual bones, not fossils!).
